Island of Ischia

Friendly fishermen

A short ferry ride from Capri, is the lovely fishing island of Ischia, Italy.  It is a little less known than the famous nearby Capri, although I have been hearing more and more of this tiny island over the past six months, so hurry up and visit soon, before the masses arrive!

As your boat rides closer to the main port on Ischia, the first thing you notice is the stunning Aragon Castle of Ischia, high on top of a steep cliff, overlooking the sea.  Originally built as a fortress  during the times of Greek civilization in 474 B.C., the stronghold continued to take on multiple purposes over the different eras of time.  Eventually, more buildings were added around the fortress, with an eventual total of thirteen churches, multiple common gathering areas (indoor and out) and buildings for entire families to be housed.  Today, it is preserved and open to the public for exploration.

The eerie walk up to the top of the fortress. You can imagine what it must have felt like to be a prisoner coming to serve their life sentence when the Castle was used as a prison during the 1800’s

I’ll never tire of flowers against natural stone. Can I please live here?

Just as stunning from a different side of the fortress

The small towns outside of the Castle are quaint and full of everyday life.  Tourism is not as prevalent here as the nearby Amalfi Coast towns, and instead you can witness the life of the island’s inhabitants, all built around fishing.

I do hope to return one day to Ischia and also stay beyond just one day.  The charm abounds.  Have you ever been to the island of Ischia?
